Is word-of-mouth and referrals alone enough for business growth?

We were approached by a reputable graphic design agency to produce a well-rounded marketing strategy for one of their clients, Beecham Fisher – an established Essex based law firm.

The solicitors had many years of building traditional values linked to service and quality, but it was fair to say that ‘marketing’ was not high on their priority list historically. When we first met them, you could even say that some of their lawyers questioned the need for marketing at all… which presented us with a question that we generally anticipate when there’s a degree of hesitancy:

“Word-of-mouth and referrals work effectively for us – so why should we consider marketing?”

After conducting some initial market research uncovering the true extent of their key competition, we demonstrated to the client they were lagging behind with their brand visibility and were therefore advised to ‘ramp up’ marketing efforts around their specialist services. It was clearly evident their rivals were increasingly active across advertising, website development, events, sponsorship and social media.

Our logic: “Targeting people who already ‘know’ and ‘trust’ your business is one thing…. but appealing to those who are unaware or unsure about you is another challenge entirely. That’s where marketing steps in”

The Approach

Our marketing proposal to the client was simple yet effective – which follows our recommended process, tailored to suit each client’s exact requirements:

  • Discovery Session & Workshop
  • Market Research
  • Internal Review
  • Marketing Strategy – including recommendations and timescales
  • Ongoing Support – if and when required

The key purpose was to provide them with a realistic way forward which is grounded in objectivity and carefully considered in its approach, combining insights with achievable action points.

“Stratagem works with agencies to forge valuable alliances and provide strategic direction to them and their clients, achieving the best possible outcome for everyone involved.”

The Strategy

We set out a plan to develop the law firm’s brand recognition and corporate reputation by initially creating engaging content and targeted campaigns (‘quick wins’ so to speak!)

The strategy set out a balanced approach to using the most effective online and offline marketing channels, improving the firm’s visibility with clients and prospects in the short term… then growing the volume of new business opportunities in the long term.

It is Stratagem’s priority to provide a positive outcome for the client’s brand, along with the potential to adapt and apply our ideas in the future
